Broddy Balfour

An engineer by day and whiskyphile by night, I’m still in the early teen years of whisky enjoyment and am far from being a seasoned vet, so you get to join along as we chase whisky flavours together.

Being in Canada's malt mecca, I have the opportunity to sample a wide variety of whisky from around the world, of which I routinely indulge myself. I'm a big proponent of balancing flavour, experience, and the value proposition so you'll be seeing me routinely considering these factors.

My Biggest Surprises

Two particularly positive pieces from the team here at Dramface, plus a pretty bittersweet entry.

Inchfad 14yo

The foundations for my own pick are purely about the ability of whisky to connect people. Calder and I are separated by over 13,000 km yet an innocent message in the Dramface writers chat and boom, we were connected over a limited release of only 234 bottles. It spawned a separate side chat that didn't exist before, bonding over our love of whisky and even over the intricacies of Star Wars, showing how whisky overcomes barriers to connect people.

Ardnageddon

Dougie provides literary masterpieces. Every piece is a short-story and has me skipping a few minutes of work in the morning, completely enthralled. It's hard to pick just one of Dougie's stories but I must nod my head to the Ardnageddon piece. I'm not aware of anyone anywhere else providing the side-by-side vertical comparison of the Ardnamurchan time capsules, much less entwining them with Dougie's storytelling.

Tria Prima

Just as Dougie provides short-stories, Tyree delivers dead blows of technical wizardry. On top of the numerous technical deep dives, Tyree and other writers reach out to industry people or even the distilleries, providing a boots-on-the-ground perspective. It's the extra little things that make the Dramface difference.
